For those following my blog, you are likely curious about the events that led to my 2.5-year prison sentence. Here, I recount the circumstances that led to that fateful moment.
As detailed in my previous post (“Life with a Narcissistic Ex”), I endured an abusive relationship for approximately three/four years. His abusive behaviour worsened in tandem with his increasing alcohol consumption. One particularly brutal night, he left me with a bruised chin, a black eye and a bitten face.
Despite my injuries, I agreed to join friends for lunch. Afterward, one of my friends suggested we go for a drink alone. I hesitated, knowing my ex would disapprove, but she persuaded me to claim we were going to the supermarket and instead sneak off to the pub.
Upon returning, my ex became violently enraged, hurling insults and threats at me. My friend responded by slapping him, and I saw a terrifying look in his eyes, a look of pure evil. He dragged me to the house, and I feared for my life as the fight broke out. At that moment, I believed he would kill me. Driven by sheer desperation, I decided I had to act first. Grabbing a kitchen knife, I stabbed him multiple times in the arms. He eventually fled, and the police were called.
Armed officers arrived, subduing me at gunpoint. Initially charged with attempted murder, the charge was later reduced to grievous bodily harm with intent after my ex was released from surgery.
The judge showed leniency and imposed the minimum sentence possible for that crime, considering my early guilty plea, the domestic violence I endured, and my numerous attempts to escape from my ex.
This is the story of how an act of self-defence in a moment of terror led to my imprisonment.
