Let me say this loud and clear, the story should be about Dr. Gomo. Not the man who took her life. Not his mental health struggles. Not his family’s pain.
But that’s exactly what’s happening right now. The narrative has flipped. The headlines, the TikToks, the online discussions all centring the perpetrator, painting him as a tragic figure, poor lad with mental illness. And honestly? I’m sick of it.
I’m very vocal about how the system has failed so many people but when are we going to stop disguising murder as merely a mental disorder? Many people struggling with mental illness end up taking their own lives rather than hurting others. I truly believe there’s a level of evil in those who intentionally and unprovokedly take the lives of others.
Dr. Gomo was a woman with a future, a healer in a world that desperately needs more of her. She deserved to be remembered with dignity and respect, not overshadowed by the story of the man who murdered her.
And then, to make matters worse, there’s the video the one that hijacks her story to focus on his pain. To argue that the system failed him.
That video? To me, it’s distasteful.
It’s not about denying that the man had struggles or that the system that let him down like so many. It’s about where we put our focus and empathy.
When you put out a video like that, you risk erasing Dr. Gomo’s life. You risk turning a tragedy into a sympathy story for the perpetrator. And that is wrong.
There’s a time and a place to talk about mental health and systemic failure and it’s not when it silences the victim’s memory.
The story should be about justice for Dr. Gomo. About mourning her loss. About demanding a system that protects everyone, victims and those who need help, before it’s too late.
I’m sick of the narrative being flipped so quickly, of sympathy being misdirected, and of victims being forgotten in the process.
Dr. Gomo’s story deserves to be heard loud and clear. It’s time we listen and highlight the loss of life rather than the man’s “mental illness”.
